Montessori based the Numeracy and Sensorial areas on the decimal numeral system or base ten mathematical system.  All the Montessori Numeracy materials are based on abstract concepts and create concrete learning materials that children are able to use independently.  They cover recognition of symbols, patterns, addition, subtraction and go on to multiplication, division and fraction work.
